LINGAYEN, Pangasinan—Governor Amado I. Espino III commended the participants of the four-day Water and Search and Rescue (Wasar) Training which is held from September 3 to 6 at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC).

In the opening program, the governor stressed the importance of safeguarding the community in times of disaster as he said that the rescuers play pivotal role during calamities notably on floods.

The provincial chief executive thanked the PNP for the show of commitment and support it has extended to the present administration.

“Ito po ay pasasalamat sa inyong pagtugon na tumulong sa pagsagip ng buhay at magbigay kaligtasan sa ating pamayanan,” Gov. Espino said.

As such, the governor also said that the provincial government will continuously communicate with the Coast Guards and Maritime offices not only during disasters.

“The provincial government’s commitment will not end on trainings,” he said further stating that more projects on risk reductions are on deck.

Meanwhile, PDRRMO Chief Rhodyn Luchinvar O. Oro commended the 91 participants from PNP provincial office for their willingness to learn more about search and rescue even as he urged them to apply and share all learnings that they can derive from the training to their colleagues and to people in their respective communities.

Lectures on the first day were anchored on basic swimming psychology, first aid and basic life support-cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), among other topics.

Participants will be given practical training during the activity, which is a collaborative effort of the provincial government through the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) and the Philippine National Police- Provincial Office.

Activities lined up till September 6, include: presentation/lecture basic swimming strokes, water treading, breath holding and underwater swim; dry demo basic swimming strokes and wet demo on basic swimming strokes; life saving techniques, entries, approaches and ready procedure as well as defense escape and releases plus swimming proficiency. The participants will also be trained on knot tying techniques.

For day three, lecture on rescue boat operations and maintenance will be discussed and demonstrations will be conducted on boat maneuvering, capsizing and recovery.

On the final day, participants will undergo a one-mile swim at the Lingayen beach. (Ruby R. Bernardino)
